Volunteer – Blog It On
The other week I was coming home from work with my hands full and out of nowhere, this adorable black cat darts up the stairs next to me. He looked a little something like this:

After I got over the shock, I played dosey-do with him (I am assuming it was a him, I actually have no idea) trying to make sure he didn’t touch me. We have two furbabies at home and I didn’t know if this kitty was sick at all. I also couldn’t open my front door because he looked like he wanted to dart in. I felt terrible because he kept trying to rub against my legs and I couldn’t scare him of f – clearly a people kitty.
He finally scampered off and I have felt sad since. I have looked around for him to either take him to the shelter or feed him but to no avail.
This feeling of helplessness made me realize how little of my time I have given to the community lately. And then I thought I could blog about this and make an appeal to my readers and ask that they spend some time volunteering with me….or I could make it into something bigger.
Well.
I like challenges so here it is:
Who: EVERYONE!
What: A day of united volunteering by bloggers everywhere
When: Saturday, May 1, 2010, anytime/all day
Where: Wherever you want
Why: One small black cat who recently followed me home made me realize I haven’t spent nearly enough of my time volunteering lately.
How:
1) Display the following button on your blog and let everyone know about the event!:

I hope you’ll join me in setting aside some time (an hour, a few hours, all day) on Saturday, May 1, 2010 to give back to our communities.
And I really hope you’ll join me in blogging about the experience in an effort to get us all out from behind the computers and out into world.
My goal is to have 18 individuals volunteer alongside myself and Bear.

What a lovely idea! I’m in a wedding party that Saturday–does devoting yourself to a semi-Bridezilla count as voulenteering? Its definitely self sacrifice!
Seriously, though, perhaps I will just do it on a different day.

that’s an awesome idea!!! and i do hope you reach your goal of gaining others to join you. can’t promise i will on that particular date but i do plan to do something sometime. i don’t have the strength to volunteer with animals. i’d be too tempted to take them all home with me!
I so cave where there is a stray animal. T and I actually had this problem not long after we moved in. We were unloading the car and a cat actually ran into the house. It took us forever to get him out. It cried at our door for two days… it ripped my heart out!

Yay! This is such an awesome idea! I’ll definitely participate. I was thinking of doing the Revlon Run/Walk for breast cancer in NYC that day, but even if I don’t, I’ll come up with something else.
